CW and CUMC friends (and incoming/transfer students),
It's hard to believe but sleepy, little Clemson will be transformed into a bustling, busy campus in just a little over two weeks. I wanted to share a few quick announcements with you regarding some retreat, fellowship and service opportunities on the near horizon.

Hope to see you all soon,
lane

Upcoming Events:
Welcome Back Cookout (Sun, 8/17) - CW is sponsoring a hamburger and hotdog cookout on CU's campus to welcome new and returning students. Mark your calendars for Sunday night, 8/17 and watch the website for more details.

Rafting Retreat (Fri-Sat, 8/22-8/23) - CW's annual rafting trip is coming up soon. We'll leave Clemson around 4 pm on Friday, 8/22 and head toward the NC mountains. We'll spend the night at a church on the way up and raft down the Nantahala on Saturday morning. We'll return to Clemson in time for dinner (and a trip to Just Mo' Barbeque for those who are interested). Cost is $25 per person and sign ups are starting NOW! Email Lane (glaze@clemson.edu) to get your name on the list as the trip will fill up fast.

First Evensong (Sun, 8/24) - CW's main gathering each week is called Evensong and is held at Clemson UMC's campus, a few miles from campus. We begin around 6:30 pm with a free, home-cooked meal and we then gather for a time of worship around 7 pm. In recent years Evensong has grown to nearly 100 students and others on average, with CU, Tri-County, North Greenville and other schools represented. For more info (including help with a ride if you don't have a car), email Lane (glaze@clemson.edu) or Jad (jadtaylor@gmail.com).

Fall Retreat (Fri - Sun, 10/10-12) - Please note that CW's fall retreat dates have changed to October 10-12 (originally it was planned for two weeks later). This year we will travel to Camp Glisson in Dahlonega, GA, 90 miles and two hours west of Clemson. Camp Glisson is a beautiful camp with great facilities (http://www.campglisson.org/), and we'll be staying in the Sparrowood Lodge. Our retreat leader this year will be David Monts, a recent Clemson grad who relocated to New Orleans after graduation to serve in the most devastated communities. Cost is $40 per person and sign ups are starting NOW! Email Lane (glaze@clemson.edu) to get your name on the list so we'll know how much space to reserve.

Upcoming Service Opportunities:

Freshman Move-In (Sat, 8/16) - Students with CW and other groups will be helping with freshman move in on August 16th. If you'd like to join CW's team, email Bryan Galloway (bpgallo@clemson.edu) ASAP so that he can order enough t-shirts for everyone.

CUMC's and CW's Carpool Team - Interested in giving rides to students who don't have a car? We're trying to update our Carpool Team for this fall, and we need both males and females who'd be willing to give rides to morning worship (10 am for Sunday School, 11 am for worship) and Evensong this fall. This is a great way to serve, especially with more students than normal not having their own cars due to rising gas prices. Email Lane (glaze@clemson.edu) to put your name on the list.

CW's Praise Band - CW's Praise Band helps lead worship on Sunday evenings at Evensong and on other occasions as well (i.e., retreats). With a number folks scheduled to graduate over the next two semesters, we'll be looking for some new blood this fall (vocalists and instrumentalists). If you'd like to help, email Cody Simoneaux (codysimoneaux@gmail.com).

Bible Study/Small Group - Interested in leading a CW-sponsored Bible Study or Small Group this fall? We're beginning to make a list of all the offerings for the fall with the hope of introducing them on Sunday, 8/24. As always, CW will cover the cost of your groups books (if one is used) and will help line up space on campus or at CUMC if desired. Email Lane (glaze@clemson.edu) with questions or details.

Wednesdays at CUMC - CUMC is looking for several college students to help with children's and youth activities on Wednesday afternoons and evenings this fall. If you'd like to help, email Lane (glaze@clemson.edu) for more details.

Music Ministry at CUMC - Susan Cumbie, Director of Music at CUMC, is looking for a number of student helpers/accompanists/directors this fall to work with children's choirs, children's bells and chimes, a new music/drama group for 5th - 7th graders and other needs. Also, students are always welcome to join CUMC's Adult Chancel Choir and Adult Bells. If you're interested in serving in any of these ways, email Susan (susanc@clemsonumc.org) for more details.

Babysitters - CUMC maintains a list of students who are willing to work as babysitters throughout the week and on Sunday mornings. If you're interested in being added to this list this fall, email Lane (glaze@clemson.edu).

I hope that this note finds you all doing well and enjoying your summer. Hard to believe that it is more than half way over!
Following is an update on several items of interest:

New CW Website
Believe it or not, CW has finally updated and upgraded our website. A huge thanks to Katie Bickers and the folks at Net Doctors in Seneca for helping pull this off. And thanks too to Chris Manley for the many hours that he invested in our website over the last few years. Go to www.clemsonwesley.com and check it out. While we are still loading certain things, it's pretty much 95% complete. A few things to note as you peruse it:

We plan to use the "flash" pictures" on the main page to highlight the 4-6 pages within the site that need to be highlighted at that time.
The "Upcoming Event" calendar will be updated weekly to reflect all planned activities.
The "Photos" link will prove to be a great way to post pictures for posterity. If you have any pictures that you'd like for us to post, burn them on a CD and mail them to me or Katie.
The "News" feature should allow us to post articles about a variety of subjects very easily. This would include major announcements (about retreats, mission trips, etc.), follow up articles on key events, etc. If you have an article idea that you would like to post, let me know.
Last but certainly not least, another nice enhancement is the addition of a "Student Forum" under the "Interact" button on the home page. To participate in this forum, please register (see bottom right on any page) on the site. After registering, update your profile with whatever info you would like for folks to know. Remember, whatever is posted on your profile is accessible by others who register.

Staffing for Next Year
Under the "Who We Are" button on the website you'll find a page outlining the new Program Staffers for the fall: Steven Spangler, Meredith Humphrey, Jad Taylor and Amber Wise. In addition, Chris Conley has agreed to replace Steven on the team when he graduates in December.
I have asked Ryan Spurrier to roll off staff so that he can help me design a new student leaderrship structure that we're calling the Joel Team. A group of two dozen or so students, the Joel Team would meet several times each year to develop the larger vision and goals for the CW ministry. The Joel Team would also work with the Campus Minister to determine which students are best suited fo serve as staffers or members of the Joel Team when vacancies arise. We'll share more details on the Joel Team as it evolves.
A special thanks to each of them for their willlingness to serve CW in this way and to assist me in the many things required to help our ministry grow in a healthy way.

Entering Freshmen and Transfer Students
Many of you have already sent me names and contact info for students that you know who are coming to Clemson, Tri-County or Southern Wesleyan this fall. In late July we'll be sending packets of info to these students, so send me any names that you have and we'll be sure to include them.

Rafting and Fall Retreats
Check out the dates on the website for the upcoming retreats as well as the annual Welcome Back Cookout and mark your calendars now. These are always great times to get to know one another better and to welcome in new students. Watch for more details in the coming weeks.

Small Groups for the Fall
While I have heard from several of you already, let me know if you have an interest in continuing your small group from last year or helping to lead a new one in the fall. Once again we hope to offer a dozen or more options for men and women, freshmen, and grad students if possible. As most of you know, CW will (1) cover the costs of the books (or other resource) that you use, (2) help you advertise and identify folks who might be interested in your group, and (3) help you secure a place to meet (on campus, at CUMC or downstairs in the Wesley building) if you need it.
I think that's all for now. Blessings to you all as you seek to make a difference wherever you are this summer!
