Evensong A Student Led Worship Gathering
Sundays at Clemson UMC Community Meal (free) at 6:30 PM** Worship at 7:00 PM**
All Are Welcome!!
Clemson Wesley’s main weekly gathering takes place on Sunday evenings and for decades has been called Evensong. The name Evensong (short for “Evening Song”) was first used by Thomas Cranmer in the first Book of Common Prayer that he published for the Church of England in the 16th century. Similar to the service of Morning Prayer (called the Mattins), Evensong has always been understood as a time of song, prayer, Scripture reading and preaching. In many ways the Evensong service in the Anglican Church was patterned after the Vespers service in both the Roman Catholic and Lutheran traditions.
Consisting of both a free meal and worship, CW’s Evensong captures the spirit of Cranmer's original service while also including the four elements typically experienced in the earliest church gatherings as documented in the Acts of the Apostles:
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer (Acts 2:42, emphasis added).
CW’s Evensong gathering is primarily designed for and led by college students. Like all Christian worship services, persons of all ages and religious backgrounds are welcome.
Evensong is held during the academic year at Clemson United Methodist Church, with the free meal beginning at 6:30 pm and worship around 7:00 pm.
