Volunteers from the local community can help these residents by taking a Saturday afternoon to make their lives a little easier. National and International Needs:
Bahamas MissionFor the sixth time in five years, CW will return to the rural islands of the Bahamas to serve, share and experience the beauty of the land and people. Since 2003 over 200 different students and others have benefited from this life-changing experience. CW is planning to take a team of 50 folks to the island of Eleuthera the week of March 17 - 25, 2008, with this year's trip being co-sponsored with the CU Gospel Choir. The week promises to be filled with reflection, fellowship, rest, and worship as we experience the island’s amazing culture and landscapes. Students and others can support this mission by (1) financial gifts to help us buy tools and supplies to use and donate, (2) donating toys and basic medical supplies to be used in ministry, and (3) providing scholarship funds for students who need assistance. Click here for a report from our last trip to the Bahamas in 2007.Compassion International ChildContact: Lane Glaze (glaze@clemson.edu) For years CW has been sponsoring a child through Compassion International. Our current child is a Haitian boy named Louben. Students and others are invited to assist with this ministry through financial gifts or by writing letters or sending cards written to Louben in his native language (French or Haitian Creole).Katrina MissionContact: Lane Glaze (glaze@clemson.edu)Since October 2005, CW has been in mission to the areas most devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Initially, CW sponsored four large and one small team - over 400 different people in total - to assist in the recovery. CW, Clemson UMC and churches throughout SC continue to support the rebuilding and recovery efforts through its support of Tigers Go (see below - a new ministry birthed from these experiences), by sending work teams, and through special offerings designated to help the UM churches in the greater New Orleans expand their ministry and mission to an ever-changing community. Students and others can support this mission by joining a mission team (the next one co-sponsored by CW will be May 12-19, 2008 and will involve students from throughout the state), encouraging their home church to send a team, or through financial support. The needs throughout the coastal regions of Louisiana and Mississippi will continue to be significant for several more years.Orphanage in Cap HaitienContact: Julia McCoy (jmmcoy@clemson.edu) Last fall CW began supporting an orphanage located in Cap Haitien, Haiti thanks to the leadership of Julia McCoy, a CU student from Tennessee. Students and others are invited to assist with this ministry through financial gifts or by writing letters or sending cards written in French.Orphanage in RussiaContact: Dr. Skip Elliott (melliott@swu.edu) Dr. Skip and Darlene Elliott, members of Clemson UMC, lead a ministry to orphans in Russia that includes sponsoring children and joining or supporting mission teams. Students and others are invited to assist with this ministry through financial gifts, sponsoring an orphan, or by joining a mission team.Presciption Bottles for Sierra LeoneContact: Lane Glaze (glaze@clemson.edu) CW collects old presciption bottles (with labels removed) and ships them to Sierra Leone to be used for packaging medicines. Collection containers are located in several places at Clemson UMC.Student Missionaries A number of students involved in Clemson ministries have taken mission trips independent of Wesley or other Clemson ministries. Currently, recent graduate Nicole Keen is in South Africa serving for nine months. Paul Davidson will also be traveling to the Bahamas to serve and numerous students are dedicating months of the year to serving in New Orleans. CW is supporting these students through their prayers, care packages, and helping each meet the specific needs necessary to take these trips.Tigers GoContact: Chris Manley (gcmanley@gmail.com) Started by a group of CU students whose lives were transformed through various mission trips after Hurricane Katrina, Tigers Go now operates an 8-week summer camp in New Orleans (Camp Collide), local work days in the Clemson area and a donation-only coffee shop (Familiar Grounds), all of which are designed to inspire and involve students to get involved in mission. CW supports TG through free office space and use of the basement in the CW Student Center to run its coffee shop several nights a week.If you feel God calling you to serve in one of these areas, on one of these teams or in the creation of a new missions ministry, email Lane (glaze@clemson.edu).
