Friends in Clemson (and beyond), I wanted to share several upcoming mission, service and retreat opportunties that might interest you: Focus the Nation Tonight on Campus (Jan 25) Interested in global-warming issues and solutions and how people of faith might be better stewards of God's creation, come to this event tonight at 7:30 pm in Tillman Hall and learn about how to make a difference in Clemson and beyond. Singers and Instrumentalists Needed (Jan 27) Clemson Wesley's Praise Band helps lead Evensong worship on Sunday evenings and is looking to add a few more instrumentalists and vocalists to the mix. If you're interested in being a part of this ministry, come to the interest meeting immediately following Evensong at Clemson UMC this Sunday (around 8:30 pm). For more info, email Cody at csimone@clemson.edu. Souper Bowl Sunday (Feb 3) Next Sunday (2/3) churches around the country will recognize Souper Bowl Sunday while our nation celebrates Super Bowl Sunday. The Souper Bowl is designed to fight hunger locally and across our world. Cash donations will be received at Clemson UMC at both morning worship services, and college students are invited to bring a canned good to Evensong (starting at 5:30 pm, with Super Bowl party to follow). Parents Night Out (Feb 8) On Friday, February 8 there will be a Parents Night Out at Clemson UMC. If you're interested in helping that night, email Meredith at mhumphr@clemson.edu. All proceeds go to missions. Statewide Retreat at White Oak (Feb 8-10) Students from UM Campus Ministries from throughout the state will gather the second weekend in February for the annual spring retreat. The topic will be "Amazing Grace" and the cost will be $50 per person, with CW will cover one-half of this for students going from the Clemson area. To sign up or for more details, email Lane at glaze@clemson.edu. Summer Investment Program (Feb 20 deadline) Each year 10-12 college students from around the state serve as missioners through the UMC's Summer Investment Program in a variety of settings including Rural Missions (on Johns Island), Camp Providence (in Anderson), Tuesday's Child (in Rock Hill), Lighthouse Ministries (in Florence) and Oliver Gospel Mission (in Columbia). Students are required to attend an orientation in early June, serve 7 weeks on site, and attend a debriefing in late July. Housing, meals and a weekly per diem are provided in addition to a stipend totaling $1,650 at the end of the seven weeks. Former SIP missioners with Clemson Wesley ties include Steve Simoneaux, Erin Walley, Josh McClendon and Candy Benson. Deadline for applications is February 20th. Dance Marathon (Feb 23) The annual Dance Marathon will be Saturday, February 23rd from 10 am to 10 pm on campus. To get involved, email Christina at cdowker@clemson.edu. All proceeds go to benefit Safe Kids Upstate, a program run by the Greenville Children's Hospital. Relay For Life (Apr 11) Once again this year Clemson Wesley will support CU's Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This year, we plan to partner with the CU Gospel Choir and some exciting things have already been planned. To get involved, email Meredith (mhumphr@clemson.edu) or Angela (acoving@clemson.edu). Annual Sea Islands Mission Week (May 12 - 17) Once again this year a group of students from throughout SC (from campuses including CU, USC, Winthrop, Francis Marion, Claflin, SCSU, The Citadel, College of Charleston and others) and other adults of all ages will meet in New Orleans for a week of mission, worship and fellowship. This week started over twenty-five years ago with students gathering on Sea Islands in the Charleston area. Since Hurricane Katrina, the mission week has been held in St. Bernard's Parish. This will be our third and last year in New Orleans, with plans to return to the SC coast in 2009. If you are interested in learning more about any of these opportunities, please email or call me.
